Team cupola - Thursday!
Team cupola is back! (sorry about it being late but we did have a little trouble getting it done :P) Thursday kicked off with one of the more fun challenges of the week : The Mars Rover Challenge. In which we had to solve a few equasions to pinpoint regions on the map where we would collect points in a short space of time while our commander had to keep his heart rate steady at the same time. Once we had collected the items we had to fly a blimp over to a robotic arm which had to remove the payload dangling from the blimp. The robotic arm then had to take the payload and put it in a robot which would take it to its final destination and for the final task we had to take a drone and land it on a platform on the table. (It sounds easy but trust me, it was quite challenging) Either way it was a very fun task to do :). We sidestepped from our completed challenge and took time out to complete our Wee and big projects :D Later on we had another fun challenge to do: this time the Mars Lander Challenge, Unfortunetly i dont know too many details about this section of the challenge because we were split into 2 teams of 5 and each team did one challenge each. however the challenge was to... (looking up my folder at the moment) ... design a lander that would protect a raw egg from a fall over 6 meters and then retrieve the egg without it breaking. (We completely missed the target ... oops lol, but atleast we managed to keep the egg intact). We have yet another inspiring guest speaker. This time it was Chuck Lloyd who was in houston. (It was really good to get people from all over the world to come and have a chat with us via skype, I really liked that bit ^^) Dinner was later tonight, but by all means outstanding! Instead of our usual self service dinner, They treated us to 3 course meal where they served us aswell. ( I especially like the desert :D) Followed by the Ceilidh at the students Union which was a very good way to have so fun at the end of the week.
Day 5, Team Columbus - Gala Dinner and Ceilidh
Hey there! So here we are, the last full day of Space School-none of us can believe how quickly time here has passed! Well we started our day in the usual style of a daily briefing and then the group split into two teams of 5. This was for the eagerly anticipated Mars Lander and Mars Rover Challenges. The team taking part in the Mars Lander Challege were Gemma, Luke, Kirsty, Niall and Niall. The challenge involved the team having to construct a 'Lander' that would be able to safely land on the surface of Mars without their Rover inside the craft being damaged on impact. The were given a variety of resources to build the craft including balloons, plastic bottles and bubblewrap (although the wonder of popping bubblewrap never goes away so the leftovers were all used up!). Its fair to say that the team did a great job with their craft- it looked strong and performed that way too! The only slight problem was that we didn't hit the target-but the egg remained safe and unharmed! As this half of the group constructed the lander, the other 5 worked on the 'Wee' and 'Big' projects. After lunch we had a little time for work on our 'Big Project' and then it was time for the other half of the team to embark on the Mars Rover Challenge. The team for this project consisted of Louise, Paolo, Chris, Rebecca and Erin. After a quick practice controlling the different vehicles we headed downstairs for the challenge. Paolo and Chris went first-Paolo directing him on where to move the rover to find the most minerals under the surface of Mars. Erin had to sit attached to a heart monitor at the same time to see how well she could keep her cool under pressure! Rebecca then had to fly the blimp over the crane where Paolo collected the cargo from her before depositing it in 'Spikey' who then had to drive it back to base. Louise was up next for possibly the most difficult part of the task-flying and landing the most uncontrollable space craft with the use of only an iPhone! Everyone played their part and all-in-all we did a good job of the Mars Rove challenge. After finishing the challenge we then made our way back to the lecture theatre for a Skype chat with Chuck Lloyd, live from JSC Houston. His talk was extremely interesting as he talked about things like changes to the body in zero gravity. After the lecture we were all excited about the arrival of mysterious large boxes and our ecitement wasn't wasted when we were told that our hoodies had arrived!! We were then allowed to go and get ready for the Gala Dinner and ceilidh but our team stayed behind to put some finishing touches to our projects. We then rushed back to halls to get ready for the evening in a hurried half an hour! However, we managed to somehow pull it off as everyone was looking their best by the time dinner came. After a delicious meal we all made our way to the long-awaited ceilidh! The band playing (called Ceilidh Minogue!) provided all the dances and gave us all a brilliant time. Everyone had a great night and it was topped off with a Conga chain all the way back to halls (started by our mentor Matthew!)! Its been a brilliant day and our whole time here has been unbelievable. It's sad to say we're going home tomorrow and Space School will be sorely missed by all. That's all for now. Team Columbus
team unity's final blog
Lisa I don't really know what to say. That's space school 2011 over and walking out of the John Anderson building for the last time this afternoon was very difficult. I was so desperate for it to last longer and absolutely gutted it was over but it has definitely been life changing. At first it upset me that I may never have similar experiences again but being surrounded by such inspirational people such as Amber Gell, Alvin Drew and Michael Baker has made me decide to work hard at school so I can have such opportunities for the rest of my life. Okay cheesy bit over now. Last night was amazing! (sorry English isn't my strong point and I cant be bothered getting a thesaurus). We got all dressed up and had a great gala dinner followed by a ceilidh. One of the highlights of the week definitely especially dancing the Canadian barn dance with Alvin Drew. Night finished with two autographs from Amber and Michael making me very chuffed. It was a late night with free reign of the dorms. Lots of parties followed by finishing off all the munchies. It was an early start today (well not really but 3 hours sleep made it feel that way). Project presentations and satellite talks followed by the greatly anticipated awards ceremony. Team unity came second over all!! and won the Mars lander challenge!! Saying good bye to everyone wasn't fun but I'm pretty sure I've added most people on Facebook by now so it will not be long term. I also managed to get Alvin's autograph which completes the set and all 3 are now framed on my bedroom wall. Talking to our guests was lovely too before we left and on the off chance they are reading this I would like to thank greatly Alvin, Amber, Michael and Antoli (excuse the spelling maybe) for making the whole experience so memorable. I should also thank Marianne, Walter and Gordon for all there hard work as well as all the mentors. Special mention to the best mentor PHIL TOLLAND though! Well the rest of team unity should be adding to this later if they remember but for the final time its good bye from me and I'm off to catch up on some much needed sleep!!
Da Vinci's Final Entry
DV here with tears in his eyes. The final morning, so me and my team stood in the pouring rain able to reflect on such a fantastic week. The ceilidh last night was fast and funny with all the team involved even some lucky people dancing with our NASA guests Amber and Alvin who were such a charm at our table. The dance doing well to sum up the week with such a team bond clear in the room, that could bring a tear to the eye. The big presentation then and after a few team huddles and rehearsing of our game faces we were up last for the big project. Our Comfort Capsule primed, Maxamillion and Keith described well why we felt NASA should take great interest in our design. It became the turn of the others to answer any questions which personally i felt they did fantastically. The guys really did we proud and continued to with the Wee Project which after construction in an hour went off splendidly to what was our team anthem Year 3000 by Busted a song which inspired some sporadic audience singing. The votes were then in and so we held our breath...and luckily we let it go as we ended up with one third place in the rocket launch down i feel to myself as it was me after all who showed up and went for a flight to prove the impossible was indeed possible. Now with a real tear in my eye i got ready to depart with kyekue who was charged with caring for me first. The final Team Leonardo huddle took place and all the following hugs indeed highlighted why i loved my week as mascot. There were ups, downs and roundabouts but most definitely innovation, brilliance and memories that will shine for the rest of my life. DV for the final time saying goodbye p.s. Mary,Jordan,Christina,Keith,Adam,Kyekue,Roxanne,Max,Giles and Charlotte I love you guys.
NEWS ON DEMAND!
Team Zarya reporting live from the Lecture Theatre within the John Anderson building as the awards ceremony unfolds. BREAKING NEWS: Team Columbus just won the Big Project with their 'Moon-Spoon' design. Well done Columbus! After a sudden crisis with Zarya's Wee Project to encourage others to apply to Space School, we have finally finished the video and wait, last in line, for our turn to display our hard work and team efforts throughout the week. Departures to follow shortly :(. However, I'm sure we can all agree that we are leaving with long lasting memories, friends and... hoodies! Team Zarya, Over and Out.
It's the Final Countdown!!! - Team Harmony
So here it is - the final seconds to the end of our incredible week!! The Ceilidh and dinner last night was the cherry on the cake! Full of laughter and energy throughout!! WHAT A WEEK!! Full of highs and not many lows! (thankfully) It's been amazing to meet all the new people and particularly our guest through the week. Special Mentions and Thanks: First of all to Marianne and Gordon for a week to remember, keeping us busy and entertained whilst learning so much!! Mentor Emma!!! Wooow! she rocked, couldn't ask for a better one! Particular thanks for the paints :) Alvin, Amber and Mike (and any other guests who were here throughout the week) Your talks were inspirational and motivated us all to do something new and exciting!! Soon to be Doctor Dan in DMEM. The model and help you gave us was fantastic and we couldn't have done it without you. Thank You! The team behind the scene who organised everything; Walter, Hyang (sorry for the spelling), Andy and co. to make SSS-2011 a highlight!! And finally the Magic Conveyor Belt for making our eating times so thrilling!
T-plus 345,600 … TEAM HARMONY!
Yesterday Evening, the Space Cadets headed to the John Anderson building for a public lecture celebrating 50 years of Human Space Flight! Our special guests included Anatoly Artsebarsky (fantastic name by the way!) a Ukrainian cosmonaut who provided us with an entertaining and fascinating insight into early space exploration. Next up was Alvin Drew, who has been with us on our journey throughout the week. Alvin discussed the final mission of the shuttle discovery in which he was a crew member and showed us some riveting footage of his experiences. Last but not least we had the inspirational Amber Gell, who convinced even the adults to change careers! Amber enthusiasm encouraged us to never give up and always follow our dreams. After an insightful question and answer session, we proceeded to the assembly hall, in the hope of entertaining one another at our “Open Mic Night”. Every team brought something different to the stage, with even Alvin and Amber taking part in a few of the performances. Harmony was as ever filled with talent (yeah right…) with our harmonious tunes … see what we did there? Anna G was a little star and was brave enough to go second up and give a wonderful performance on the flute, playing Flower Duet (solo, ironically!) But Anna was not the only member of team Harmony to take to the stage. Liam soon followed and showed us all the hidden diva within him, with his rendition of ‘Grenade’. Andrew also showed his musical side, taking part in a musical quartet singing ‘Hallelujah’! Neal was the last of team harmony to perform, and to our disappointment didn’t take to the stage with his famous walk ☹ (Which will be revealed tomorrow). However we forgave him following his brilliant performance of “In Principio”, if that’s how you spell it. Team Harmony would like to say well done to everyone who performed last night, you guys were awesome! We are now about to go participate in the ‘Mars Rover Challenge’ which requires us to simulate a mission to Mars. This involved seven jobs, some more difficult than others as we soon learned, navigator, commander, blimp pilot, drone pilot, rover driver, robot arm operator, and ‘spikey’ driver. We were greeted onto ‘Mars’ by raucous music, which served to increase our excitement. As the clock started we had a rather successful mineral identification challenge (Well done Liam & Lisa). However it all went downhill from there, as the challenges grew ever more difficult. The Evil Blimp decided to float to the ceiling and crawl around to rest on a lightshade, before finally doing what it was told, leaving Anna G extremely stressed and hating the blimp with a vengeance. Unfortunately for Neal, the drone’s take off site was placed right next to a desk, and on take off it careered into said table, destroying the motors and nearly destroying poor Neal. Following this eventful start, it got slightly better before going wrong again as it flew into a door, losing its precious cargo. Finally, after many attempts, we managed to land on the target site, (Wehey!!!). Despite Neal’s best efforts to control the dreaded drone, his hard work was slandered when we saw some PhD students fly with style with their own self constructed drone. This afternoon, we completed the Mars themed activities with the Mars Lander challenge. We were required to construct a landing system which would protect a raw egg dropped from several metres. Safe to say, despite the egg remaining intact, our landing was an epic fail, flying far off course. We enjoyed a live lecture from Chuck Lloyd in Houston in which he discussed the effects of zero gravity on the human body. He was also very willing to answer the many questions we had for him, ranging from gender differences to conceiving in space… Following the lecture, there was great excitement when we were informed of the long awaited arrival of our hoodies! WOOH! With the two bright orange hoodies, it is safe to say we are the brightest team (in more ways than one ;) ) Now to the sad task of packing before we head of to our Gala Dinner and Ceilidh. WHOOP WHOOP! Tune in later for the final installment of our epic journey! ☺
Thursday
This morning was a productive morning for Team Unity. James, Douglas, Elizabeth, Lisa and Murray had to build a Mars lander with basic materials. Our construction seemed to be not as aesthetically pleasing compared with other groups yet it performed better than we anticipated. As the Mars Lander crew was grafting; Andrew, Heather, Michaela, Elliot, Joanne and Charles were preparing for the wee project presentation. They made such a professional video, considering time and material constraints. After Lunch, James made an impressive display of his skills using the computer software. The prototype of our product (VacuuMoon) was complete and it looks great :D When we Rendezvoused with the rest of the team at the Mars Rover challenge area (Duh Duh Duuuh). All of our group made an impeccable effort but the Martian terrain proved a formidable foe . We would like to congratulate Phil our mentor for being such magnanimous character :P Over and Out for now Team Unity
Team Tranquility - Day 3 cont. & Day 4
Following Emily's lovely lunch the whole team headed to the microbiology to find out what interesting microbes were lurking on our skin. We were very creeped out by the prospect of other organisms living on us and it was a tad scary to see what was found. Fortunately, we only found the expected microbes although other teams discovered some more interesting creatures. Apparently somebody found E.coli which normally lives in your back-passage (we'll leave you to judge!) Admittedly, we were almost disappointed that we didn't find some 'mental' flesh eating bacteria although the species living on me ate haemoglobin, aaaah! Ryan was disappointed when we had to dispose of the microbes as they are his friends - weirdo.

We then had a lecture on how engineering was being used in Gambia to supply schools with power for lighting and thus greatly improving peoples lives which showed that engineering wasn't just about making machines etc but could actually have a great effect on the lives of the most vulnerable.

Team tranquility than headed to a lecture given by Antoly Artsebarsky (a Russian cosmonaut) along with Amber and Alvin which was very interesting and amusing at parts :D.

Finally, we had the Open Mic night which although it didn't go exactly to plan, because of timing, certainly showed that "science geeks" can also be well rounded people. We are comfortable on a stage as well as in a lab! :P

Day 4 - Today has been so busy trying to get all of the projects finished along with doing the mars lander and rover challenges. Our lander successfully landed the egg without breaking it and looked very like an alien spaceship.

We are all looking forward to the Gala dinner and ceilidh tonight! Woop! Woop!

Just in case anyone was worrying about the welfare of Emily she has had a great day and is thoroughly enjoying herself!

Destiny's Day 5 - Destiny Strikes Back

Destiny's Child (Hey Gordon :P )

Sadly no good morning text from Lyle this morning, he had slept in, although not so badly as too encroach into Rosie's territory!!!

We then separated into our two starship fleets: Mars Lander and Mars Rover, for the challenges we would later 'choose to accept'.

The Mars Lander Challenge involved accepting a new space cadet into our team….a raw egg that we had to transport safely from the balcony above to the target below, a challenge that we were quite successful in, in that our cadet landed safely, with a smooth descent, and was able to be removed from the lander in one piece within the time constraints.

Afterwards, we had intriguing demonstration by some PhD students who were partcipating in builing drones, we hope that our studies are as fun as that in the future.

Sadly over lunch, we had to lose two space cadets as they departed onto a secret mission known as ‘P.R.O.M.’

After lunch came the moment that we had all been waiting for: THE MARS ROVER CHALLENGE, where we entered through the ‘air-locked door’ and into the command centre, where the second fleet put their earlier training to use.  Their first mission was to drive a rover successfully over an unknown planet to collect as many points as possible within the time limit, very tense for the rest of us to watch. Meanwhile, ‘Mission Commander Robert Runner Bean’ who had to keep his heart-rate steady throughout the mission.  (He was so good at this that his heart rate was worryingly low, and he “had no idea what was going on at the same time”).

Our next mission involved teamwork between three of our best cadets, whose ‘Mad Skillz’ allowed 'Robot Claw Arm Operator' to successfully detach one of two foam pieces (as the other fell to the floor) from the airship controlled by ‘Pilot Robert Raspberry’ and deploy them into 'Spikey' as controlled by our Mission Commander.  Our third and final mission, was to land a drone onto a target, which was successfully completed by Catriona Cauliflower, previously navigator for Calum Cabbage in our first mission.

After this exciting event, we heard Chuck Lloyd live from Houston give his interesting views on space travel and learnt about the problems faced by humans living in space for long periods of time. Once Chuck Lloyd had finished answering our insightful questions, we finally reciveved our hoodies which created lot of excitement with students and caused frustration among the mentors who were handing them out.

Now, we are looking forward to the chance to grab Amber or Alvin and make them sit with us through the Gala Dinner and eagerly awaiting the celiedh that is to follow.

**remember especially to follow our twitter@SSS_Destiny for updates on how the Gala Dinner and Celiedh are going.**
