Special award for the man who went to the moon
Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise, who spoke to the Scottish Space School students in the historic Mission Control Center only last month, received an Ambassador of Exploration Award this week at a special ceremony in his old elementary school.

Nearly forty years after he missed out on the opportunity to walk on the moon, Fred received a piece of moon rock encased in lucite.

My Experience Of A Trip Of A Lifetime!

Wow! Just got back from Houston, Texas earlier this week from an educational trip touring the Johnstone Space Center and other NASA facilities. I was fortunate enough to be able to socialize with many astronauts and NASA engineers at Dr Rick Scheuring's welcome party and Geek night, such as Heather Paul and Amber Gell in which they inspired me to "Dream Big!".

Besides chatting to some of the most motivating astronauts and engineers, we also had the chance to tour the Johnstone Space Center and even go where not a lot of people get to go. Can you imagine watching Apollo 13 in Apollo 13 Mission Control, sitting in the Flight Director's Seat and Fred Haise walks in, tells us his fascinating Apollo 13 stories and personally signs some souvenirs for us? Just Incredible!

Not only did I meet other friends interested in engineering but I have gained a further insight into NASA. This in turn has widened my horizons vastly from becoming a commercial pilot to now, following the career path of an engineer, possibily at NASA. Through many presentations given to us by the likes of Gene Kranz and Christie Hanson, I could feel their passion and dedication that they give  in Space exploration and has inspired me to follow suit. Truly one of the best weeks' of my life to date , and certainly never one to forget. To anybody else out there who believes that it's not possibie to achieve your goals, just remember : "The Sky Is Not The Limit"!

Ambassadors for Scotland
This was my tenth visit to Houston with Scottish Space School students and they have always been excellent ambassadors for Scotland.

On this occasion, however,  they were exceptional and their families and schools should be very proud of them.  Right from the off when they met with the First Minister at the Scottish Parliament until they landed at Glasgow Airport ten days later they conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and created a favourable and positive impression on everyone they met from NASA and other organisations.

The Scottish Space School's founding objectives were rooted in STEM and excellence, and Houston 2009 comfirmed that they are still being achieved.

My Scottish Space School Experience

I have just arrived home from a once in a lifetime trip to Houston, Texas. I am extremely grateful to have been given such a fantastic opportunity; it really was the most inspirational and insightful week. Having the chance to connect with people who are the elite in their fields of science, engineering and medicine was a privilege which has given me the motivation to strive to become the best that I can be in the future. With my aim for a career in Medicine in mind the trip gave me the opportunity to get an insight into the importance of human health and its impinging effect on future space missions as well as learning more about some very interesting subjects related to space exploration. On top of that, I shared this experience with new friends and enjoyed some great times creating memories that will last forever.  This trip has certainly influenced my plans for the future and I am thankful to everyone that made this trip one that I will never forget.

My thoughts on space school, Houston
Visiting Houston has been one of the highlights of my education to date, the trip exceeded my expectations massiveley and encouraged me to aim towards an enginnering career at NASA. Some of the most inspiring moments included meeting Gene Kranz and Fred Haise two figures who have truly inspired me to aim high in the future.
My Space School Experiences
My time in Houston has been better than any of the expectations I came with and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Meeting the likes of Gene Kranz and Fred Haise talking about their Appollo 13 mission was inspriational. I found it hard to comprehend how they spoke about their mission, which must have been an extremely frightening experience, in such a calm manner despite the near fatal problems that arose. This visit also enabled me to speak to atronauts, engineers and medics one to one and I have made many contacts who can help offer advice as I plan to study medicine at university
